J'ai eu beaucoup de fun avec Véro et Andrew, ils ont été super accueillants et aimables. But it is time for me to move on. I spent all day running around Cambridge, looking at rooms, and the last ad I checked... the one with a stain of hot chocolate on it... turned out to be the right one! I will be living on Mill Road, the closest place I could find to the city-centre, and the room is pretty big and cheap. Yayyy!

Beer Festival this week, je vais visiter avec Vero et Andrew j'ai hâte de goûter à de la bonne bière, on arrête pas de me dire que la bière canadienne est poche et sans-goût.

Can I be in the movie?

Je devais travailler de 10 à 7, aujourd'hui, à Magdelene Bridge, mais j'ai terminé ma journée à 12:30. Le tournage de "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" était si proche de notre station que les visites commençaient seulement à l'autre bout, s'arrêtaient à Kitchen Bridge et faisaient demi-tour. Donc on pouvait rien faire à notre bout, à part envoyer des touristes à l'autre boute de la rivière, jaser et éventuellement jouer de la guitare ek les gars, ben comfortable, en dessous de Magdelene Bridge pour éviter la pluie constante. C'est pourquoi j'suis partie tôt.

Un des gars était payé pour rester das un punt, en plein milieu de la rivière, un peu après le pont, pour empêcher les bateaux ou kayaks de passer. Y dormait. En passant sur King's Parade ce matin, j'ai vu 6-7 monsieurs en costumes, pour le film, et j'pensais que j'avais vu Donald Sutherland habillé en costume du 17e siècle! Mais sur imdb.com ça dit pas son nom dans le casting d'Elizabeth. Zut!

Lost in translation

Thursday I told a cashier I bought navy and black pants to match our shirts and sweater and she said "Why are you telling me this? Wait, what did you say? You bought what???". Turns out I should have said "trousers". Because "pants" are underwear. I also learned the words "mingin", "minger", "chav" and "piky" in the last few days.

Friday was a sad day: I emailed the boys from the house to tell them I wanted the room and they told me they found someone who would stay longer. Meh. Keep searching, girl!

Today, Saturday, was a very busy shift: 11-8. And I did 4 tours! "Scattered showers" in the afternoon (always in the middle of MY tours, of course).
Behind St John's College's New Court, at the Cripp's building, there were cameras, a tent, a fancy boat... they will be filming the sequel of Elizabeth, tomorrow!
On the last tour, at 7PM I didn't have to say a word, it was a Ghost Tour and an old lady was telling scary stories. We were two punts side by side and the wind had completely dropped. Beautiful. I would do it again anytime.

Magdelene Bridge

Today I went to the Silver Bridge end of the river, but I was scheduled for the Magdelene Bridge end of the river. SO I was late (everybody is). My toe is better, my arms are not. The wind was killing me! Le "touting" a pas pogné alors j'ai pas fais bcp d'argent, et seulement un tip de 2£. (bloody hell!)

Me reste encore à trouver une bicyclette, appeler les gars de la maison pour dire que je la veux (J'la veux tu?) et m'ouvrir un compte de banque (demain). Ce soir je ragardais SPACED avec Andrew, pour me préparer pour Shaun of the Dead. (whatevs)

First day on the job: I get 2 t-shirts, a waist coat (museum style... F!), a sweater as well as a raincoat. All of these are navy with the Scudamore's logo. All of these are MINE! And then I hurt my toe (I flipped my nail - GAHHH WHY ME???)
10:00 à 12:00: boring. C'était gris, j'avais froid. J'ai finalement pogné un groupe de 8 personnes à 1h00, sur un gros punt. T'ÉPUISANT ÇA! J'oubliais le script tellement je forçais! Aller: 20 minutes. Retour: 40 minutes à cause du vent, du courrant, du mal et des stupides jeunes français qui savent pas comment punter! ("Merd-euh! Tu m'as coupé, salopard d'enculé-euh!" <-- self-hire punts) Deux chinoises m'ont donné du tip: 2 apples! "Tank you, Tank you!" ... um... ok?
I then spent 2 hours "touting" (harrassing passers by) until I caught 5 american ladies and a Sri Lanka couple. Second tour: still painful, and a tip of 7£. I'm rich! I don't know if I'll survive the summer. 2 tours and I'm already dead!

Je viens d'aller voir une maison à 30 minutes de marche de Scudamore's, 10 minutes de bicyclette. Selon Andrew et Vero c'est pas mal la meilleure deal que j'pourrais avoir: loyer raisonnable, salon + ou - grand, belle chambre avec grande fenêtre, assez de place pour bureau + armoire + tablettes (nice!) on serait 2 filles 2 gars. Pas pire, hein??

Webcam??

C'est pas facile de faire de la recherche pour un logement dans une ville que tu connais pas... L'internet est pas SI efficace que ca, et il va falloir que je pose des questions au monde du punting, au "Canadian Club" et a mes nouveaux amis.

I discovered the other day that there is a WEBCAM in St. John's College, right on the Bridge of Sighs! So one day, if you get a call and I tell you to check the website, it's because I'm right on (or underneath) the bridge. Cute huh? On voit tout en direct!

Who wants to go punting?

Faisait beau soleil des mercredi matin, quand j'suis arrivee, et ca l'air qu'il pleuvait chez nous au Canada, des que j'suis partie... J'ai apporte le beau temps avec moi! Jusqu'a hier.
Bon, j'ai pas mis beaucoup de photos justement parce que j'arrete pas d'oublier ma camera. Dimanche soir on est alles souper chez Frank and Jeanne, on a mange tout l'apres-midi et les deux chats et le chien sont adorables.
This morning I went up and down the river Cam once, while trying to remember all the dates and names of colleges and bridges... and it was raining. After lunch with Vero and Andrew, I did the test for Scudamore's, one on one with the boss, and I passed! (and it was still raining!) Il posait plus de questions sur la temperature a Ottawa que sur la visite. I'm now in the accomodation hunt, I hope I'll find a place to live as fast as I found my job!
p.s. - Scudamore's is definately the best of the three main punting companies in Cambridge, and it's also expanding

1st weekend in UK

Friday, after studying a lot, I spent the day in Cambridge, with Vero. I had a 2nd interview with Granta Boats this time, but I didn't actually go punting because it was gonna get very busy. So I went punting anyways (for free) with a Scudamore's punt, to practice. I'm getting better at it! One thing I noticed is that the pole can easily get stuck in the bottom of the river... don't hold on and pull it out! The punt won't stop for you. I almost fell 3-4 times that way.

Apres avoir fait le tour du centre-ville trois fois (boutiques, Lion Yard, etc) on s'est rendues a Nando's pour manger avec Andrew et deux autres amis. Ils ont passe la soiree chez "nous". Samedi (hier) c'etait relaxe, un autre ami est venu et j'ai neglige mon etude un peu... pour regarder Star Wars IV et Monty Python the meaning of life. I'm beginning to understand british humor now. Apres un fantastique souper de fajitas on a regarde.. um... Star Wars V... je sais, c'est trop... Andrew et Vero et Hodgeson se sont endormis. Gang de vieux!

Jour 3

Je pense que j'ai apporte le beau temps avec moi, parce que ya pas plu une seule fois depuis que j'suis arrivee! J'apprend le script, tranquillement pas vite... j'ai jase sur MSN, j'ai pris des photos, je bois du jus, j'ai pris une belle petite marche sul'bord du jardin... I don't think I relaxed so much since the holidays.

I am now immersed in the british culture. I watched... Monty Python and the Holy Grail! (and the Life of Brian) My favourite character is definately the french guard:
"He's already got one-e, you see! it's-e very nice-e!"
"Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries!"
"Fetchez la vache!"

Punter in training

I had a good night and I'm not jet-lagged anymore. Pretty fast, eh? This morning I had my first interview with Scudamore's Punting Company (a punting company I contacted in the winter). It went so well I can't believe it. I had a go at punting, one on one with the boss, and he practically gave me a tour.
Il voulait que je fasse le test final demain (jeudi) pour pouvoir commencer a travailler en fin de semaine... J'sais pas moi, mais ca va pas mal mieux que je l'imaginais! It's lookin' good! Je vais faire le test lundi (tour + punting pour le boss). Alors la je dois etudier le script! Apres ca j'ai magasine avec Vero, au Grafton Center (le genre de Centre Rideau de Cambridge). Ah manne, le centre-ville c'est vraiment pour les pietons pis les cyclistes! Ensuite on a dine au resto pis on est revenus ici.
Having a good response right from the beginning is so much more than I expected... I think I'm gonna like it here.

England is better than Canada (Andloo)

So I still feel like it's Monday, but it's actually Tuesday. After hugging everyone 3-4 times, NOT crying, eating a granola bar instead of my "last poutine", I hopped in the plane at 7:00 PM. I could see the War Museum, the Parliament, Ottawa U and the Civilization Museum all at once. I was sitting beside a really old lady that looked 100 yrs old, I watched Big Mama 2 (sucks) and I tried to sleep a little bit. It was only dark for about 4 hours! Shortest night ever!! The dinner on the Thomas Cook airline was very good and I saw the sunrise and the Atlantic Ocean.

"Et l'atterrissage est reussi!" "Ben oui, c'est l'fun, hein?"
Vero et Andrew sont venus me chercher a l'aeroport et on a pu jaser dans la voiture, direction Cambridge. J'avais oublie combien Andrew me faisait rire! J'ai fais un tour a l'epicerie et je peux vous dire que tout est parreil partout en 2006. Je voyagerai tant qu'il y aura du Captain Morgan spiced a travers le monde.
Bon ben excusez-la, le BBQ est presque pret, desolee pour les accents absents, et les photos s'en viennent bientot. (il me reste encore a figurer comment utiliser flickr.com)

2 more hours!

Well well... Je pars d'ici dans 2h00... and I don't feel nervous at all!
Hier je me disais sans arrêt “Dernière fois que je dors dans mon lit...” , “Dernière fois que je marche dans le petit sentier!” , “Dernière fois que je prends l'OC Transpo” (thank god! c'est assez désagréable quand y fait chaud, pis c'est sale en plus).
Après deux camps de leadership en une semaine, j'ai eu la chance de dire aurevoir à pas mal de monde, mais je sais qu'il m'en manque. À tous ceux que j'ai oublié: Passez un bel été et je vous revois en septembre!!

I managed to fit everything in only one suitcase! I can't wait to be in Cambridge now, to meet all of my older sister's friends, to go downtown and find all the cool pubs and bars (and the grocery store and the pharmacy of course). I already contacted the Cambridge Canadian Club at the University of Cambridge and they have pub nights and a huge BBQ party in June. They sound like really nice people (obviously, they're Canadian).
I have a huge TO DO list for my stay in Europe: Ireland, Scotland, Paris, London... Hum... si mon budget me le permet, bien sûr...

Poem to Mom

Dear Mom,

I'm leaving for 142 days,
No more classes, exams and essays.
But I must also leave behind

Three more nights and I'm on a plane

So I did 2 leader camps in an old shack

I will have good punting techniques,
