A day in the life

We got up at 4 AM, and they were ready to go by 4:15. I didn’t walk them to the door. I slept in. Work at 9AM @ Silver Street, maybe the 2nd time I tout more than the minimum wage. yé! Y fa chaud !!

In the middle of the afternoon, I heard someone swear in Canadian-french. I met a couple from the province of Quebec… the kind that I despise: “We’re NOT Canadians ! We’re QUEBECOIS! Canadians don’t speak French!” What do I look like, you ignorant, selfish retards?

I did 3 tours with a sore left wrist and finished around 9 PM because of 2 bookings. At least at the last one, I was offered a few glasses of champagne. (Don’t drink and punt!) After 12 hours of work, there’s nothing better than going out to dance! I put a skirt on, thank you very much. The band at B-bar is very good, but unfortunately they don’t get all the attention they deserve. After that we went to Life, which was 4£, but then you get a 10£ voucher at the entrance. Nice.

Maybe it was meant to be...

As soon as I came back I got a 2nd tour, and then the afternoon was spent playing pranks on everyone and emptying cups of cold water down our coworkers’ backs as they punted under the bridge. And touting. Another minimum-wage-day for me… I cooked dinner for JoLouis (delicious). And we went for a beer at All Bar One where we talked about their trip. They are sleeping at my place tonight (on the floor in my tiny little room, yes) and getting up @ 4 AM to take the bus to the airport. I’ll walk them to the bus stop! Ok maybe I’ll walk them to the door…

growing roots

Chilin' at Vero & Andrew's... I've been sitting on the couch all day writing on my blog, checking my emails and uploading pictures.... I'm growing roots!

Enjoy the pictures!

Gotta get up, now, we're doing a BBQ. The sun is shining!

Monday = relaxing, swimming, wine tasting

Yeah babay, sleep in... go to Sainsbury's... say hi to the punters at Magdelene Bridge... check your hours.... REALISE YOU'RE SCHEDULED AT THE OTHER END OF THE RIVER IN EXACTLY TWO MINUTES! What??? Someone made a mistake on my hours and it didn't turn out to be a problem.

(until I punted the return trip so we'd be back on time) On a mangé des nachos sur Magdelene Street alors j'en ai profité pour aller re-dire un petit allô à la station. Next thing you know Joëlle steals my camera and I'm thrown in the water. SPLASH! I was really holding on tight to Louis's T-shirt! There was NO way he could've pushed my overboard! But Ray and Viktor came to help him out! (I'll get them back...) When I tried to get Louis a little wet, I was thrown in once more. RE-SPLASH! Let's say the walk home was uncomfortable...

At 8pm, Jo-Louis, Vero-Andrew, Clare-Adrian and Jenny-Tom we all attended a really nice wine tasting at the Bun Shop. 3 courses, with 2 glasses of wine each. I know how to really appreciate wine, now! Stir, snif and slurp! It was a delicious dinner and I came back to sleep on the best inflatable mattress in the world at Vero & Andrew's.

Punt punt punt your boat...

The mobilers are getting a little bit too friendly. It’s so frustrating, they keep saying I should join them... (a) I hate touting and with them I could push tours all day instead and (b) I would still make more money. BUT I would be one of "them"! (And I don’t want to leave all the beautiful people I met at Scud’s. or disappoint my cool boss)
I miss the canadian cold.

Where’s the Team Spirit?

Il fait beau, il fait chaud!

Un beau samedi ensoleillé...

Extremely busy day at Silver Street, I was the last one IN (scheduled at 11:00) therefore I was the last one OUT. At 8:30 pm! I did another wedding tour in the afternoon. You’d think they would tip, but nooo! Too busy taking pictures of the newly wedded couple!
Did you ever work until 8:30 on a day-job, on a Saturday? It’s depressing. I was going crazy by the minute… “Hellooo, how would you like a lovely romantic river tour in the sunset, tonight? I’ll sing for you!” I’m soon going to have the Scud’s V-neck/farmer-tan… I put sunscreen on, but it’s getting bad…

(awkwaaard!).

June 2nd: “Take-the-piss-out-of-JulZ” Day

Another struggle at Magdelene Bridge. Jo-Louis and Vero-Andrew showed up right on time for my 2nd tour of the day (which turned out to be a shit-tour… too many kids in the boat… a lot of self-hires bumping in mine… patience!). So not only was it a bad tour for them, but I was also sad of not being allowed to fool around and say stupid jokes and sing O Soooole miooo!

Pis son petit gars l’a tellllement descendu en disant: “That’s so superficial, mom… even a half-year old would know that… Money isn’t everything.”

Today was the “Take-the-piss-out-of-JulZ” Day. I was constantly teased by mobilers AND Scud’s chauffeurs, and I couldn’t help but laugh, which just made it worse. Careful, she bites! At 5pm, I was finally unpacking my boat when someone thought it would be funny to untie it and push it away (without my pole). When I finally managed to paddle back to the side, I was pushed away once more. I felt like crying. I wanted to go home. But I just laughed! We all love each other very much…

Yum…

O, B-Bar...

Silver Street today. The stoopid rain won't go away! When it' raining we often end up sitting in The Anchor, or hiding at the cash. Jonti and me tried to gamble a little bit, at the slot machine in The Anchor, no luck. I didn't tout a single pound that day (I didn't really try).

JOLOUIS!

Tuesday was a day off... thank god... And I did the groceries with Vero, I finally got my bank account debit card and I went to the Silver Street station to say hi. By 8:30pm I was bored out of my mind and text messaged 5-6 people to just go out and have a beer. Turned out Sid, Cat and Viktor showed up, and we had a beer at "All Bar One". Someone is gonna get me a bike for 10£! Yay!
Wednesday was interesting. Another tough day at Magdelene Bridge, I try and I try to tout but I just feel like I'm harrassing people. It's like Shinerama fund raisers but it's not for a "good cause". It's really hard and it's the only way to make a lot of money.
Every Wednesday, something cool happens. 3 Wednesdays ago, I was in Cambridge for the first day, bringing my resume to the punting companies. 2 Wednesdays ago was my 1st day on the job. Last Wednesday was my first day in my new room, on Mill Road. Today… Jo-Louis arrived!

Yayyyy! Three french canadian sisters in Cambridge.... there's something in the air... (I didn't fall in yet, not yet!)

Bank holiday?

BANK HOLIDAY! Should be as busy as yesterday! Everybody outside!
Il pleuvait 20 minutes, il faisait soleil 10 minutes, and so on.
I'm over Monty Python and Spaced... so I asked what the best british movie was to some of the punters. Many of them agreed that The Italian Job (1969) was the best. Guess what I watched with Andrew and Vero tonight? Eh oui, The Italian Job. It's so funny, I love how the Minis are so synchronised, that's talent! criss crossing in the streets escaping the Fiats... And the stupid ending, that's where the expression "cliff hanger" comes from.
"We are the self-preservation society!"

(One... Two... Three...)

i heart meat (sorry veggies, it's a bbq)

Busiest day yet: It’s the first real sunny day since I started working. About time, too... So obviously, the river was PACKED with people, full punts (12), self-hire punts navigating like blind retards. Very dangerous. I couldn’t tout anything because I was always on the river. Pete sent me to the higher part of the river, 10 minutes on the way to Granchester to pick up a newly wedded couple on a decorated punt. Coming back towards the wedding party, trying to be as invisible as possible, I didn’t say a word when my sunglasses fell in a quiet “plop!” I just watched them sinking and swore very loudly in my mind. So romantic.

Punt Wars and more beer

Was that already my 8th shift with Scud’s? Time goes by so fast! I still need to work on manoeuvring parking and turning but I’m SO much better at punting straight and strong (after a day like today: 10, 8, 12 people, etc) Yes it’s easy for the big boys, but it’s hard for me and I’m proud of not fainting after my 3rd big tour today. I’m tired of the rain, of being wet all the time. The war against the mobilers at Magdalene Bridge was quite strong on this rainy Saturday. According to the boss, it's illegal, they'll try to "convert us" and they’ll be gone by the end of the summer. (Scudamore's on the left, mobilers on the right)
Most of them are ex-Scudamore’s employees who say they make twice the money. One of them told me “Oh so you were just recently brain washed too, huh?” Not at all, I just feel like the mobilers are like the dark side in Star Wars. Ya know, it’s tempting but I must resist! We're WAY cooler and professional, anyways, so I don’t give a thing!

(The sun is shining, we are rhyming, Are you punting today ? This is the way! Etc... COPYRIGHT on that. if you want to hear more, e-mail me) On a fini par passer la soirée à se trouver des «inside jokes» pis à niaiser.
C’EST LONG! Faut que j’mange, moi!

2nd set of pictures in CAMBRIDGE

ET VOILÀ

untitled (what!? must I always have ingenious comic ideas?)

I'm sitting in a nice restaurant called CB2, free internet, the breeze is coming through the door (and the fan on my right). I just survived 3 days without internet, II just spent more than two hours in here. I hope I'll have time to write this post before I get kicked out!

So Wednesday, after a big day at the steps (Silver Bridge) I went to the beer festival with Vero, Andrew and friends from work. British beer is so much stronger, better, varied and cheap. There were like... hundreds of different beers! I had a great time, I had a hogroast burger, and I learned that some people are crazy enough to have deep fried mars bars. (say wha???)

I'll be late but I have no idea HOW late".
It's huge and there are a lot of colorful light! Yayyy! It was great, I'm definately going back.

Bon, photos and then souper. Chalut! And don't forget, what happens in UK, stays in UK! (ruling out everything that I'm writing in my blog) Ah pis aussi, gardez toujours vos clés avec vous, surtout si vous vivez au 3e étage où la fenêtre est en fait sur le toît.

Moved in!

Quite comfortable room in a Victorian house, for 300£/month! There's almost too much space in the room (no chair yet, you see...)
- grande cuisine super propre
- salles de bain raisonnables (3 pour 9 personnes)
- une court pour les byciclettes (I'll end up buying one... or nicking* one...).

I moved everything in this morning with Vero's help and my Canadian flag is already on my door. I've been in England for 2 weeks, today, and I didn't go out yet! This is what I have left to do, find the bars and pubs, and it will be easier with a room in the town center, I can stumble home as late as I want, without worrying about the bus! Yayyy!

*nicking: My good punting comrades say the best way to get a good bike is to "nick" one. If you lose it, get it stolen or nicked, do it again. And again. I'm obviously not going to do that. ... ... What!?
